Prizes

Paterna Town Council awards a total of 16,000 Euros, divided as follows:

First prize:

certificate, 8,000 Euros and three concerts for the 2011-2012 season.

Second prize:

certificate and 4,000 Euros.

Third prize:

certificate and 2,000 Euros.

Fourth prize:

certificate and 1,000 Euros.

Special prize for the best performance of Spanish Music:

certificate and 500 Euros.

Special prize for the best Spanish Pianist:

certificate and 500 Euros.

Stages and repertoire

The Prize consists of a Qualifying Round, a Semi-Final Round and a Final Round, all of them open to the public.

Qualifiers

The repertoire for this stage will be 15-20 minutes long and include:

• A Prelude and Fugue from “The Well-Tempered Clavier” by J.S. Bach, or a Sonata by D. Scarlatti or Padre Antonio Soler.
• One virtuoso study.
• A free choice of one or more works.

A maximum of 18 competitors will go through to the Semi-Final.

Semi-Final

The repertoire for this stage will be 25-30 minutes long and include:

• A Sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven.
• A free choice of one or more works.

A maximum of 4 competitors will go through to the Final Stage.

Finals

Recital of 35-45 minutes duration, to include a free choice of complete works in different styles and from different periods.

In all stages of the competition, competitors will perform in alphabetical order, starting from the letter that is drawn during the Opening Ceremony to take place on the 24th April 2011at 7.30 pm at the Auditori Antonio Cabeza in Paterna.

Competitors must be present at the event. This order may be changed in certain circumstances that must be justified by the candidate and approved by the Organizers.

To enter for the SPECIAL PRIZE for the best performance of Spanish Music, competitors must perform at least one piece by a Spanish composer at any stage of the competition.

General observations on the stages

• It is not permitted to perform the same piece in different stages.
• All pieces must be performed from memory.
• The Jury may interrupt the performance if it exceeds the maximum time allowed in each stage.
• After the 31^st March, no alterations may be made to the programme.
• The Organizers will provide studio pianos for competitors to rehearse on throughout the competition.
• Competitors who wish to try out the piano that will be used for the competition performances will be able to do so on the 24^th April 2011 from 10.00 am onwards.
• The Organizers reserve the right to authorize recordings and broadcasting of any competition performances, without granting competitors any payment or right to refuse.

Registration and acceptance

Pianists of any nationality, born after the 1st January 1981, are eligible to enter.

The documents required from applicants must arrive at the Secretariat before the 11th March 2011 by any of the following methods:

The documents required are the following:

• Photocopy of competitors National Identity Card or Passport.
• Professional photograph in digital format (JPG) sent by e-mail (300 ppi recommended)
• Curriculum Vitae to be written in Spanish, Valencian or English. Go to registration form.
• Registration form to be completed in Spanish, Valencian or English, with participant’s personal details and complete repertoire to be performed by the contestant in the various stages. Go to registration form.

All registration documents must be sent to:

If the documentation is to be sent by post, the documents stipulated in sections A, C and D must be sent in a single envelope to the competition Secretariat. If the registration is done online or by e-mail, all documents should be sent together. If applicants choose to send a CD or DVD by way of additional material for their application, this must be sent by post.

The competition secretariat will send an e-mail to confirm receipt of the registration documents within a period of ten days after they have been received from each competitor.

If any of the required registration documents are found to be forged, incomplete or incorrect, the competitor’s application will be considered void.

The Competition’s Organizing Committee will select a maximum of 80 pianists, based on the registration documentation, and will inform the chosen competitors by e-mail before the 21^st March. Following this notification, ONLY the selected competitors must pay the registration fee of 80 Euros, at no cost to the recipient, before the 31st March 2011.

Deadline for payment of registration fees and sending of payment confirmation by selected competitors.

24th April:

• 10:00. Competitors may try out the piano in the Auditori..
• 19:30. Opening Ceremony (Auditori Antonio Cabeza):
  • Introduction.
  • Draw of performance order.
  • Opening Concert.
  • Welcome Cocktail for competitors, jury, sponsors, VIPs and guests.

25th, 26th and 27th April: QUALIFYING ROUND.

27th and 28th April: SEMI-FINALS.

29th April: FINALS.

  • Finalists’ Performance
  • Jury’s Announcement
  • Award Ceremony.

Payment of registration fee

This transaction must be made by:

• Bank transfer to: Premio Internacional Pianístico de Paterna. Selected competitors will be given the bank account details.

Selected competitors must send a copy of the bank transfer receipt or notification by e-mail (admin@premipianopaterna.es) or fax (0034 96 111 14 94) to the competition Secretariat by the 31st March 2011.

A competitor will not be accepted until this notification and the full registration fee has been received. The fee is not reimbursable. If the fee has not been received within the appointed time, the competitor’s application will be rejected.

Jury

The Jury will be made up of at least 7 members from different countries. All of them will be renowned figures from the world of music. They may be soloists, professors of music, conductors, composers, teachers at a College of Music, music critics, etc.

General observations

• The First Prize cannot be shared, while the other prizes may be shared in the event of a tie.
• The Competition Organizers, in partnership with the other organizations involved, will offer to organize various concerts for the winner.
• The Jury can decide not to award one or more of the prizes.
• Prizes are subject to the relevant tax laws.
• It is compulsory for all winners to collect their prize in person. If they are not able to do so, they will lose the right to receive the Prize.

By participating in the Paterna International Piano Prize, competitors fully accept the rules and relinquish any right to enter a complaint. Any circumstances not foreseen in the rules will be resolved by the Jury. In case of doubt as to the interpretation of these rules, the text in its Spanish version will be referred to and considered valid.
